LIGHT UP YOUR HELI

lighting kit

This kit is a very good way to add interest to your heli for a very small sum of money.
It comes with a lights controller, pp3 battery connector (the battery in the picture is mine and does not come with the kit), 1200mm ribon cable, 2 x high brightness red led, 1 x high brightness green and 3 x high brightness white led's; 2 of the white LEDs strobe at the same time and are for the wing tips or skids and the 3rd that strobes alternately to the other 2 is for the tail.
I decided to get my power from the heli's battery so I spliced into the feed going to the ESC. I was able to do this because my heli's battery is 9.6 volts which is the same as a PP3, any other voltage and you cannot do it. I had also had a problem with weight and didn't want to add the weight of the PP3. This means that when my battery is fitted the lights are always on, this has the advantage of letting me know that the heli is powered up because of course if it wasn't the lights would not be on.
The kit comes with ample wiring which means that it fits all sizes however I wanted no excess wiring so I cut mine to fit exactly.tail light
Now before I say anything else that meant that I had VOIDED MY WARRENTY so if there had been any fault I could not send it back although before altering the wiring I had checked the lights did work.
I cut the wires going to the skids and tail; this meant that the LEDs had to be re-soldered on. This is a tricky thing to do as the LEDs must be the correct way round and heat shrink sleeving has to be used to stop any possible shorting. If you are OK with a soldering iron and understand the priciples involved then go ahead if not you would be well advised to leave it as standard; I will admit Martin did this part for me as he makes a much neater job. I fitted an inline connector to the cockpit light so that I could remove the cockpit easily and I also thought it looked better. I attached my lights with coloured tie wraps that corespond to the colour of the LED, also if the wiring needs to come off for any reason it is a simple job of cutting the tie wraps and replacing them later. skid lights

So if you feel like giving it a go and I am sure you will: send me a picture of the finished result.
